Local Search Systems

Continuous growth of information volumes only increases demand for search systems working with documents of various formats stored in DBMS, e-mail messaged and other resources (on the computer’s hard drive, in the enterprise’s local network, etc.). Just a few years ago DBMS or straight search rubricating would have been enough to satisfy the needs of a corporate user, but with today’s gigantic data volumes, straight search pales into insignificance.

It’s easy to say that the most important characteristic of any search system is its speed – both indexing and searching speed. Ability to work with various data sources, support of multiple file formats as well as additional functions (such as morphology & thesaurus support, other types of search) also make significant factors. Let us look at the results from testing a few programs that have demonstrated completely acceptable search speeds and an extensive number of functions. All of them were installed on the computer with Athlon/2,2 GHz data processor, RW memory of 1 Gbyte, IDE-disk Seagate on 160 Gbyte all under ÎÑ Windows XP. A base of documents of DOC, TXT and HTML formats weighting around 20 Gbyte was specially created for testing.
