<< Previous desktop search Page | Next desktop search Page >> Search capacitiesAs for the search capacities, they are quite weak. The tests have shown that the program doesn’t perform search for txt and html document formats in Russian and allows finding them only by their titles, not by contents. The only thing Copernic has to offer to improve the quality of search was the standard set of logical operations, and even that feature was discovered accidentally as there was nothing about it in the program documentation. While at that, program’s ‘Help’ also needs work – it’s available only though Internet, which, in turn, is really inconvenient, and even online there isn’t that much help information. Evidently the developers decided that the program’s simple interface doesn’t require the proper help material. Continuing on the discussion of search capacities, it’s worth mentioning that regardless of its weak query analysis, the program offers an interesting system of search – the user can select the type of file(graphics, audio, video etc.) enter search query and pick features common only for that particular type of files. For instance, for the audio files that might be the features of mp3 tags (singer, album, data etc.), for graphics you can choose their size (by extension), all in all: separate settings for each file type. After that type of query quite an extensive list of information is displayed in the result window and if files of types different from your specification also happened to fit the query, you can open then as well by clicking on a certain link. After the search in a specified file type has been conducted, the program will show quite an informative list of results, and in case other types of files also fit your query, you’ll be able to open them by clicking on the appropriate link. The result window is worth mentioning separately. Under the list of files the content of these files is displayed (a similar thing you can often see in a lot of e-mail clients). Although, you can look through the document only by opening it in its own format as there is no plain text display, and that’s not always convenient since opening the document usually takes more time. Thou considering that Copernic can look for graphics and music, there is an option of browsing them as well as multimedia files. The main principles of how this program works have been described. Now let’s look at what Copernic Desktop Search can offer us in working with the network. Looking might take quite a while, but you won’t see anything interesting. In other words, this program was not meant to be a network one. Copernic Desktop Search is nothing else but a home search engine. Thus, obviously, the best use of this program can be made on the home PC. Here it will deal well with all the user’s queries consisting of one or two words, will find the needed information while its support of multimedia files along with the background indexing regime of low priority and a familiar interface will only help this program get its users.
