Google Desktop Search and GDE Enterprise

Google’s free development is meant for information search on the user PC, online and in the corporate network. However, Google offers pain advice and service of installing GDS Enterprise system in the enterprise ($ 10 thousand for each thousand users).

GDS works in the browser window and, accordingly, the whole interface of the desktop version looks just the same as Google’s online search engine. Unfortunately for the professional user and quite fortunately for an average user or a newbie, after GDS has been installed it starts indexing all the data on your computer and you can’t select the indexing paths on your own. Thus you’ll have to install TweakGDS program that will let you work with the indexing paths. But for TweakGDS to work you need .Net Framework and Microsoft Scripting Runtime. Installing and setting GDE for work with local network is a complicated task even for a qualified system administrator.

As for query analysis and results GDS is absolutely identical to Google online: it has the same system of results display, and offers the same standard set of logical operations for search queries. Google Desktop Search is meant exclusively for file search as there’s no browser or any other way to visualize the results. The number of file formats, supported by the program, on the other hand is quite sufficient; search on Web-pages is enabled. Indexing and searching speed is appropriate for the home user. Though GDS managed the text base in only eight hours, the index size appeared one of the smallest — 4,5 Gbyte.

An advantage (which can be also thought of as a disadvantage) of Google Desktop Search is that it supports additional modules, though you first have to install a huge number of such modules. And in order to show the program which files and folders it should index, you need to download an additional component gdetweak. Without it all the indexed information on the local computer as well as in the corporate network will get indexed. The complexity of the whole installation process compensates by very flexible settings when operating with the local networks. Group policies function is a definite advantage in GDS’ work in the local network as it lets you pick different settings for each user.
