These days computer disks can become real gold-mine of information gathered from different sources. But if the owner of all this information happens to forget where exactly certain paper was located, it’s next to disaster since it’s almost the same as this file doesn’t exist. Of course, all operation systems contain search of files by their titles or content. However all of them use straight search, which means going through all files, which takes an inexcusably long time.

An alternative to straight search is a search engine with a previously created index. Online search engines use robots that load web-pages, analyze the content words, record the results into an index and move onto the next pages by the links. Index accumulated in such a way is used to process the user’s query. When engine gets the query, it searches the index for records corresponding to the query words, and then in accordance to certain rules consolidates the result to be shown to the user.

However this way of indexing is hard to transfer to a separate computer and even into the corporate network. Internet uses a standardized technology for receiving information. Most of the Web documents use HTML format which is easy to transform into plain text, used later to create the document index. Beside that, HTML has certain tags (like headings, links, pictures), that serve to create an index file. In the recent years there have been appearing various tools supporting search in more complicated formats (like DOC or PDF), as well as non-text data (graphics, audio files), yet when indexing such it’s not the multimedia files that get analyzed but their link texts.
