Local Search

When local search engine creates the index file, it must be able to receive information on the content of documents of various formats, standard HTML, PDF and DOC that are for Internet-search won’t be enough. Beside those local disks often contain “1C” documents, mail message archives, multimedia libraries, etc., and if the local search engine can’t analyze the content of all the documents that the user needs, its efficiency becomes controversial. In this case to index multimedia information it’s practically impossible to use internet-search methods since the file system contains instead of a full description of the saved file only the date it was saved, its size and type. Local search engines have to scrupulously take apart graphic and text file formats hoping to find text description of the multimedia data.  Thus the more file formats a local search engine can read the more valuable it is to the user (though no one is talking of actually reading multimedia files).

Another difference between local and internet-search is the completeness requirement, that is consideration of all the documents matching the query,  stored either on computer local disks or on indexed external carriers (CD, DVD, flash-cards). Since World Wide Web is not a fully interconnected system, the completeness requirement is not at all actual or relevant for online search engines. With the local search, on the other hand, it’s quite important since the user might depend on either presence or absence of a certain document. The local search can guarantee completeness since all data is stored in file system that is fully transparent to the search engine and has no inaccessible document clusters, which is possible in the Web. Nonetheless, local search engine would only benefit from having an access to the other operation systems, like Windows – to Linux and other Unix-like operation systems, installed on the local computer.

Another problem of completeness is search in external carrier collections. Indexing technologies allow you conduct the search even in alienable discs, but that arouses the problem of index size, which must always be available, i.e. must be stored on the computer local disc. Overlooking that, “Archivarius 300” system, for instance, offers indexing of removable carriers as well as network resources.
