Copernic Desktop Search

This program targets home users and lets you conduct search for documents both on the local computer and online. The program interface calls for nothing but positive emotions – everything is made to fit the general standard: it’s neither flashy not flunky. When first run the program offers you create indexes.  The indexing takes place in a background mode, which is more or less acceptable to the home user, yet doesn’t quite suit the corporate needs.  It’s also worth mentioning that the program offers a wide range of options for automatic creation of index: an inbuilt planner, possibility to index while the computer is idle, in the background mode, with a low priority. The indexing took its time – almost 11 hours.

Copernic Desktop Search lets you select what to index – Documents, Graphics, Video, Music. In the other tab of the options window there will be an option of picking the specific types of file extension. You can additionally set the index in such a way that, for instance, pictures smaller than 16x16 or audio files less than 10 seconds won’t get indexed. Besides indexing files from folders, Copernic words well with electronic mail and contacts from Microsoft Outlook (Outlook Express) address book and can index “Favorites” and “History” from Internet Explorer. Query analysis is quite weak, though you can choose the type of files and insert a query with attributes peculiar only to that file type. For instance, for the sound files, it may be characteristics of mp3-tags (singer, album, date etc.), while for graphics you may choose their size.

The result window is worth mentioning separately. Under the list of files the content of these files is displayed (a similar thing you can often see in a lot of e-mail clients). Although, you can look through the document only by opening it in its own format as there is no plain text display, and that’s not always convenient since opening the document usually takes more time.
